) looks to be reversing course a little and trying to get a version of its Windows Vista computer operating system as an option on the $100 “One Laptop Per Child” project spearheaded by MIT to place computers into the hands of as many kids in distressed and poor nations as possible.
The project itself is highly admirable, as its goal is to connect kids to a world that expands their horizons and hopefully leads some countries from destitute status to growing, civil communities that are empowered by the knowledge that lives on the internet every day, as well as connecting citizens to one another and students with much-needed tools.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp’s Windows Vista is starting to see mass adoption from businesses nearly a year after it was released, the company said while predicting a strong first holiday season for the product.
“We feel like we are starting to hit our stride not only in demand, but in deployment in business,” Kevin Johnson, president of Microsoft’s platform and services group, said in an interview.

Leopard hits 2 million mark: A drop in the bucket?

it sold more than 2 million copies of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard in its first weekend. “Early indications are that Leopard will be a huge hit with customers,” said CEO Steve Jobs in the press release, though he might be just a teensy bit biased.
I’m guessing Apple is seizing this opportunity to gloat because demand for Leopard – like the iPhone — will never be so high as on its first weekend.

Microsoft Surges After Sales, Profit Beat Estimates (Update4)

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) — Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates
grew $2.67 billion richer today after his company trounced
analysts' estimates for sales and profit, propelling the shares
to their highest level in six years. Gates is Microsoft's biggest shareholder, with a 9.3 percent
stake. Today the stock climbed 9.5 percent. Chief Executive
Officer Steve Ballmer owns 4.3 percent of the company, which
means the value of his holdings climbed by $1.24 billion.
Earlier, the shares rose as much as 13 percent.
