Peter Gutmann - A security researcher at the University of Auckland New Zealand - has become one of the most cited “experts” on the evils of Vista DRM despite the fact that he never touched the Operating System at the time he wrote “
A cost analysis of Vista content protection
” (which he has since modified several times).  He’s cited by a number of folks like security researcher Bruce Schneier and has appeared on Steve Gibson’s podcast raising concerns about Windows Vista DRM.  There’s just one little problem: Gutmann’s theories are unsubstantiated and they’re all wrong.

How misleading was the ‘Windows Vista Capable’ campaign?

How misleading was the “Windows Vista Capable” campaign that Microsoft ran during the run-up to the January release of the operating system?  Seems that it was misleading enough for a judge to
approve a federal trial for the class action suit
.  The trial is scheduled for October.
Some background.  Two Windows XP PC buyers, Dianne Kelley and Kenneth Hansen, filed a class action lawsuit in March claiming that Microsoft used “bait and switch” tricks to sell XP systems labeled as “Windows Vista Capable” which, as it turned out, could only run the lowest, most cut-down version of Vista - Home Basic.  Home Basic meant no media center support and no Aero.  Microsoft had asked that the case be dismissed; the judge decided that the case should proceed.

Windows Vista Pre-SP1 Patches released by Microsoft

It may not be a full-fledged service pack, but at least it’s something. Microsoft has reportedly released two set of Vista fixes that have been designed to address a number of bugs. They also take care of general performance issues that obviously the company can’t wait for the official Service Pack 1 to be rolled out.
Microsoft has made these two Vista Patches available on its Windows Vista Web site, but the company has not made them available via the Windows Update process.

Vista Updates Hint At Coming SP1 Release

Dell expands Linux PC sales to Europe, China
