Taiwan laptop computer shipment up 40 percent in 2nd quarter

Taiwanese companies shipped an estimated 19.6 million laptop computers abroad in the second quarter this year, an increase of 40 percent from the same period last year, a research group said Saturday.
Intel Corp.'s May launch of a new Centrino platform helped drive consumer demand for high-end computers, the Market Intelligence Center said in a report.
Laptop exports also got a boost from foreign firms ordering in advance to avoid possible shortages of key components in the second half of this year, the report said.
