Alex St. John and I go way back. For more than a decade, I’ve watched him take pot shots at a lot of folks and build an interesting business as the CEO of Wild Tangent. He was the subject of the book “Renegades of the Empire” because he and two other friends started the DirectX technology that got Microsoft’s Windows software into the games business. Without his work, the Xbox business would not have been possible. That’s why I put a whole chapter on him in my book “Opening the Xbox.” He got fired from the empire and sent a scathing letter to his colleagues. This man who once trolled the halls of Microsoft with a faux battle ax is now a respectable CEO. Even today, his work depends on Microsoft’s operating systems. But that hasn’t stopped him from being a vocal critic. I caught up with him a few weeks back but am finally getting around to transcribing the interview.
